Let us remember the final plea of its founder, Max von Stephanitz's last words to his good friend Muller on his deathbed, “Take this trouble for me: make sure my German Shepherd Dog remains a WORKING dog, for I have struggled all my life long for that aim“.
Hopefully we will all live to see the day when the German Shepherd dog world will be under the same concept, that of a well-structured, perfectly balanced dog capable of performing at the highest known levels.
The Dogs of the DDR“ (“Deutshe Demokratishe Republik“ or East Germany) are an interesting phenomena because it is a unique gene pool. The DDR GSDs, is isolated and free of polluting bloodlines and outside economic influences and guided by an efficient state-run program, prospered to become East Germany's most popular breed of dog by far, and an unspoiled model of the original breed. Their special traits include dark pigment, powerful musculature and frame, robust good health, outstanding working characteristics and abilities, few undesirable recessives, and best of all, a very high percentage of normal hips. As such, there had been (by the East German SDG, which issued annual statistical reports) consistently reported an annual percentage rate of approximately 85% normal hips (free of any trace of hip dysplasia).
For those who think that the original working German Shepherd Dog has been lost, take another look! Some of the best and top-winning working dog kennels in the world have successfully introduced DDR bloodlines, most notably those of Roby Glockeneck, Lord vom Gleisdreieck, and Zorro vom Laager Wall. Nowadays very scarce, these and other DDR bloodlines still more rare are getting a second look from a new generation of world GSD enthusiasts, especially those who rely on their dogs for working performance as we do.
Having said all that let us not exclude breed lines that have produced some courageous police dogs and as always there is always exceptions to the rule like my own street wise oddball 'Boss' from show and working lines who works purely because he loves me.
The knack is to search and recognise the right type of dog for the right job and person only experience can teach you that. So we live and learn.
